House Targaryen is a former Great House of Westeros and was the ruling royal House of the Seven Kingdoms for three centuries, before it was deposed during Robert's Rebellion and House Baratheon replaced it as the new royal House. The few surviving Targaryens fled into exile. It was believed that they used a magic and ruled dragons. Most of them were mad. While the serial is coming, survived members of the family try to get their power back.
Members:
Prince Viserys Targaryen, called "the Beggar King", in exile in the Free Cities. Killed by his brother-in-law Khal Drogo for threatening his wife and unborn son Rhaego. A real badass.
Queen Daenerys Targaryen, called "the Stormborn" and "the Unburnt", Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, Mother of Dragons and former Queen of Meereen. Currently sailing to Westeros to take the Iron Throne. Daenerys is polite and well-spoken, but filled with quiet determination. She used to be cowed by her brother's ambitions and his occasional cruel rages, but her time amongst the Dothraki has taught her pride, confidence and skills of command. She is still somewhat naive of the world due to being young and living her life as an exile (with only her petulant brother to rely on for knowledge), but she is intelligent and quick to understand now that she is free to pursue her own path.
Interesting Facts:
The last surviving dragons in the world were possessed by House Targaryen, who used them to conquer and unify the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The Targaryen dragons eventually died out about a century and a half later, however, after which the species was considered to be extinct throughout the world.
At the same time that the serial began, Daenerys Targaryen was in possession of three petrified dragons eggs. They were given to her as a wedding gift, still beautiful to look upon.
Daenerys Targaryen's dragons:
Drogon, named after Khal Drogo, black with red markings.
Larger and more aggressive than his siblings, he is also the mount of Daenerys Targaryen.
Rhaegal, named after Rhaegar Targaryen, green with bronze markings.
Viserion, named after Viserys Targaryen, creamy white, with gold markings.
